Learning modules: technique, design choices, and presentation habits that hold up in real work

The course is organised in modules you can revisit like a studio reference. Each module teaches a repeatable workflow, the terminology to buy tools and materials with confidence, and the small checks that prevent rework.

Module list, written like a studio notebook

Each module includes a small build, a checklist for quality, and a short “why it failed” section that covers the usual causes: contaminated joins, heat spread, over-polishing, misaligned findings, or photos that hide scale. Expect specific terms such as gauge, tolerance, annealing, work-hardening, pickling, and grit progression. The aim is not to memorise vocabulary; it is to help you diagnose what happened on the bench and choose the next step with less guesswork.

01

Design workflow and measurable decisions

Learn to turn a sketch into a plan you can build: reference lines, symmetry checks, and quick measurement habits. You will practise thinking in constraints—where the clasp sits, how thick a component must be for wear, and where a seam can be hidden without looking like a patch.

This module introduces tolerances and fit. A piece that closes cleanly is usually the result of boring, methodical checks: consistent thickness, square ends, and predictable alignment before solder ever touches the joint.

Materials selection and findings logic

Compare metals and findings by behaviour: hardness, tarnish, springiness, and how a finish ages. Learn how solder grades relate to heat order, and why “stronger” is not always “better” for a specific join.

Torch setup, flux, and solder control

Set up a safe heat zone, learn flux application, and practise heat control so solder flows where it should. We cover sequencing to avoid re-melting earlier joins and common causes of brittle seams.

Forming, work-hardening, and clean geometry

Learn when to anneal, how to avoid cracking at bends, and why work-hardening can be useful for spring components. You will practise squaring ends, keeping planes crisp, and preventing distortion while forming.

Finishing sequence and grit progression

Build a repeatable finish: file marks out, crisp edges protected, and a polishing sequence that does not smear details. Learn how to spot where a grit step was skipped.

Stone-setting basics (foundations)

Understand the vocabulary and the physics: seats, burnishing, prongs, bezels, and why support beneath a stone matters. This module focuses on fundamentals and safe practice, including when not to set a stone in a given design.

Product photography and listing clarity

Set up soft, neutral lighting; choose backgrounds that do not distort colour; and create a shot list that covers scale, closures, and key details. Learn what to write in a listing so the piece is described accurately: materials, dimensions, finish, care notes, and packaging.

Presentation details: packaging and care language

Learn the small things that make a handmade piece feel considered: tissue and box sizing, a care card that matches the actual metal and finish, and a simple product story that stays honest. This keeps expectations aligned and reduces back-and-forth.

Small craft business fundamentals (non-financial)

Build a simple routine for pricing using materials, consumables, and labour minutes; plan small batches to avoid in-progress clutter; and track variants so your listings and photos stay consistent. This content is for educational studio planning only.
